Atkins House, located in York, PA, is a residential and
outpatient treatment center for women offenders -
providing counseling for drug, alcohol, and sexual abuse
as well as victim awareness, life skills, and mother -
child transition after incarceration. Atkins House is a
non-profit service organization.

Profile of the Woman Offender
- Most women offenders to not have an employment history and
were unemployed or underemployed at the time of their arrest.

- Women's crimes are usually non-violent and related directly to
financial need or substance abuse.

- Most women offenders have suffered childhood physical, sexual
and/or emotional abuse.

- Most women offenders have long histories of substance abuse.
The average age for beginning drug or alcohol use is 9 years
old.

- Most women offenders were involved in abusive relationships
and the partner is often-times the leader and/or instigator in
the actual crime.

- Women offenders exist in isolation. They are more likely than
their male counterparts to be ostracized by their families.

- The majority of women offenders are single parents. Their
children are 5 times more likely to be involved in the juvenile
justice system than their peers.
